Studying Art and Design develops a wide range of creative skills. Learners are encouraged to discover and explore topics and develop independent enquiry; along side this they also develop skills in creative thinking and problem solving.

Business Studies gives youngsters the chance to understand the dynamic environment in which business operates and to appreciate the many factors which impact upon business activity and business behaviours. The study of Business enables learners to try to gain an understanding of the issues facing UK business in the 21st century.

Computing Science

We look to provide learners with every opportunity to become architects of their digital future.  Learners will experiment with many aspects of Computer Science, develop their computational thinking and reflect on the use of computing in the wider world. Youngsters learn how computers and networks function; how to break down complex problems; how to design and develop computer programs and the impact that Computer Science has on society.

English is developed in a wide variety of skills through the strands of Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening. Learners develop their skills of reflection and self-evaluation so that they are able to identify areas for their improvement and become more self-aware. English learning groups are arranged in mixed social groups throughout the five years. Learning is personalised so that each young person can unlock to their full potential.

The overarching aim of this KS3 course is for learners to develop a more established understanding of the world of business prior to moving on to KS4. The course also aims to develop learners’ capacity to problem solve quickly, concisely and effectively.

Geography

The Geography department aims to guide learners through investigating the amazing, unique and wonderful parts of our world. Learners find out about the processes that shape our landscape; how human beings interact with each other and the world; what hazards the world presents and how to manage these; what makes biomes unique; why some places are poorer or richer than others; where places are; why some places are drier than others; what resources are important; and where to find resources and what might happen if they run out.

Philosophy and Ethics

Philosophy, Ethics and Religious studies will appeal to learners who have an interest in the big questions in life, who are accepting of a range of beliefs and approaches to living, and who are passionate about voicing their own opinions.

History

Through learning about History and providing people with a sense of their past we allow people to better understand how culture and society has developed today. History also allows us to learn from our mistakes, to be able to reflect on past actions to ensure that they never happen again. Honywood Historians are encouraged to ask important questions, use and evaluate evidence to support their answers and develop their skills of analysis and being critical of sources of evidence.

Mathematics at Honywood is aimed at realising the full mathematical potential of each learner regardless of prior attainment and knowledge. Learners will be given opportunity to foster an enjoyment of the subject to enable authentic learning to take place. Through their study of languages, learners develop an appreciation of  the important and powerful nature of languages as a tool for communication across a range of countries, cultures, and opportunities.

Physical Education

Throughout learners’ time within Physical Education they experience a wide range of learning activities that allow them to develop their physical skills and sporting knowledge. Our aim is to make every PE experience an enjoyable and active one, encouraging all learners of all abilities and ages to participate in physical activity inside and outside of the school. Learners develop a number of interpersonal skills that contribute to youngsters’ happiness and success.

The study of product design encompasses Food, Preparation and Nutrition, Graphic Products, Resistant Materials and Textiles.

Learners will study Biology, Chemistry and Physics concurrently developing their understanding as the course progresses. As the units in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are similar to the Trilogy course, learners have a range of options, which can be tailored to suit each individual’s needs.
