I have enjoyed welcoming learners back this week after what I hope was a restful and enjoyable break. The key message in my assemblies this week has been the importance of listening and learning for learning’s sake. I ended with a message: ‘The most powerful tool to achieve or do anything is knowledge’. I levied a challenge to our learners: to commit to cutting down the things that distract us from listening. Without listening there is no learning; without learning we cannot acquire knowledge; without knowledge we reduce the possibilities for the future.
It has been pleasing to see so many learners arriving focused and ready to tackle their learning head on; walking around the school this week I have been impressed with the level of engagement and challenge. I particularly enjoyed taking part in the Lead Learner and Senior House Captain interviews yesterday. The candidates gave a presentation to Mrs Frogley, Mr Hall and myself followed by interview style questions regarding their vision. I was very impressed with the professionalism of every single one of them. I can honestly say that the quality of the presentations and interviews was on a par with many of the interviews I have conducted with teachers. Learners presented their vision for change as well as the legacy they want to leave behind. Of particular note was the honesty they displayed when reflecting on what works and what doesn’t work for them. The successful candidates will be spending the day with Mrs Frogley discussing their ideas and visions and creating a plan of action. It was so hard to choose as everyone did such a great job. It takes courage to even put your name forward for a thing like this. Inevitably, processes such as this always lead to disappointment for someone. I would like to extend my thanks to all candidates.
